Rare 19th-Century Golden Oak Pedestal Desk / Scientific Workstation

A rare and highly unusual late 19th-century golden oak pedestal desk, designed as a specialist scientific or laboratory workstation. Constructed in richly figured golden oak, the desk features a  raised gallery to the rear and a black, inset working surface incorporating a large circular brass platform, apparently designed to accommodate and secure a microscope or other scientific instrument.

The desk is particularly remarkable for its extensive arrangement of numbered specimen or storage compartments. Both pedestal sections are fitted with numerous narrow, individually numbered drawers, arranged behind finely constructed slatted fronts and operated by small turned knobs. The numbering and compartmentalised construction suggest that the desk was intended for the organised storage of microscope slides, specimens, samples, instruments or other scientific materials.

The desk has three Braham lock which lock middle drawer and both banks of drawers,, providing practical working and storage space, while the broad overhanging top and raised oak gallery would have helped contain equipment and materials during use. A circular brass fitting set into the work surface provides an especially distinctive feature and reinforces the desk’s apparent specialist purpose.
