19th Century Narrow-Loom Blanket.
A 19th Century Narrow Loom Welsh Blanket, Talgarreg, circa 1880
A rare and evocative 19th century narrow loom Welsh blanket, woven in natural cream and black wool with bold vertical stripes, creating a striking and timeless design. This example was woven around 1880 by the postmaster of Talgarreg, Ceredigion, who is recorded as working on a handloom in a room at the back of the village post office.
Such blankets embody the deeply rooted weaving traditions of rural Wales, where individuals often combined their official duties with skilled craft production for local households. The narrow loom construction—producing two strips later hand-sewn together—is characteristic of the period, reflecting both the scale of the looms and the intimate, cottage-based nature of weaving in 19th century communities.
Condition : overall very good for its age, colour loss at one end of the blanket (recently professionally cleaned)
