19Th Century Welsh Folk Art Cabinet Of Curiosities
£950.00
A very unusual 19th century Welsh diorama housed in its original wooden glazed cabinet, retaining traces of the original green paint. The gabled case encloses a curious and eccentric assemblage, combining Staffordshire porcelain figures, dried flowers, shells, seed heads, and coloured glass to create a fantastical miniature scene.
The composition includes a procession of small Staffordshire figures – ladies, children, and soldiers – set amidst naturalistic materials and decorative elements, with larger figures flanking the sides and animals interspersed among the arrangements. Dried hydrangeas, gilded seed pods, and seashell borders lend a folk-art quality, while the naïve, almost shrine-like character suggests it may have been created as a domestic curiosity, memorial, or devotional display.
Such eclectic dioramas are exceptionally rare survivals of vernacular creativity in 19th century Wales, blending popular Staffordshire pottery with natural and found objects to produce a vivid and highly personal work of folk art.
