19Th Century Maritime Ships Table.

A 19th Century Maritime Ship’s Table.

A rare and practical 19th century maritime ship’s table, finely crafted from dense Cuban mahogany, a timber highly prized for its durability and resistance to the sea air. The rectangular top is supported on boldly turned legs united by a removable  metal barley-twist stretcher, allowing the table to be folded for storage or transport in the manner of campaign furniture.

Tables of this type were indispensable aboard ship, serving as both dining and work surfaces – particularly for chart reading and navigation – yet ingeniously designed to be dismantled and carried ashore for use when officers or explorers required furnishings on land. The combination of refined turned elements with robust construction speaks to both elegance and utility, hallmarks of 19th century naval craftsmanship.

Such versatile pieces were essential in the age of exploration and empire, when naval officers and surveyors demanded practical but well-made furniture that could endure the rigours of life at sea while maintaining a degree of sophistication.

England, circa 1830–1850.
