A Pair of Medieval Stone Gargoyles, English, 12th Century
A rare survival of two English Romanesque limestone gargoyles, dating to the 12th century. Each fragment depicts a fantastical beast in crouched, alert posture, from a great ecclesiastical or monastic building.
Carved with expressive, almost grotesque features, the gargoyles embody the medieval fascination with hybrid creatures, serving both an architectural and symbolic function—warding off evil while protecting the sacred fabric of the church. Despite their centuries of exposure to the elements, traces of the vigorous hand-carving remain visible, with worn surfaces now softened by age and weathering.
These figures, now reduced to fragmentary sections, still convey the vitality and spiritual intensity of early medieval craftsmanship. Comparable examples can be found integrated into Norman churches and cathedrals throughout England, where gargoyles combined utility with theological symbolism.
England, circa 1150.
Provenance : recently found in a garden in Pershore Worcestershire.
