A Rare 18th Century Wrought Iron Adjustable Candle Sconce
An exceptional hand-forged wrought iron wall-mounted candle sconce, English, 18th century. The sconce is ingeniously designed with a long adjustable arm, hinged to a fixed backplate, allowing the light to be swung and positioned as required. The candleholder features a rolled socket set above a broad drip pan, both forged with subtle hammer marks that speak to its handmade origin.
These practical yet rare fittings were commonly used in vernacular interiors, providing adaptable light in cottages, taverns, and workshops before the advent of fixed lighting. Few survive due to their utilitarian nature and constant use. The present example retains a wonderful dark, time-worn patina, its surface enriched by age and centuries of handling.
A scarce survival of early domestic lighting, both functional and sculptural, embodying the resourcefulness and craftsmanship of the 18th-century blacksmith.
