Three 19Th Century Miniature Ship Paintings.
£450.00
A delightful set of three 19th century miniature reverse glass paintings depicting finely detailed sailing vessels at sea, each housed in matching ebonised ripple–moulded frames with gilt slips.
Executed in the traditional reverse painting technique — where the image is applied to the back of the glass and viewed from the front — the works display remarkable precision, particularly in the intricate rigging and sail lines. The vessels, likely American and British merchant clippers or coastal traders, are shown under full sail against softly graded skies and gently rolling seas. One example flies the American flag, while the others display maritime ensigns, adding both colour and narrative interest.
The hulls are carefully picked out in black with highlighted gun ports, and the sails are delicately shaded to suggest movement and light. The luminous quality of the paint, enhanced by the glass surface, gives the sea and sky a clarity characteristic of this charming folk art tradition.
Such pieces were popular in the mid to late 19th century, often produced in port towns as commemorative portraits of ships, keepsakes for sailors’ families, or decorative items for maritime homes and inns
