19Th Century Maritime Industrial Storage Cabinet.
A large 19th century maritime metal storage cabinet, reputedly salvaged from a vessel broken up at Pembroke Dock in the 1940s, later serving decades of practical use on a Pembrokeshire farm storing animal feed.
Constructed in heavy riveted iron with a substantial industrial presence, the cabinet features six square doors arranged in a three-over-three configuration, each retaining its original simple iron pull handles and working hinges. The interior reveals perforated metal panels and shelving, pierced with repeated cross-form ventilation holes — a practical naval detail allowing airflow while protecting contents in damp sea conditions.
The surface carries a beautifully weathered, oxidised green paint finish, layered and worn through years of maritime exposure and agricultural use. Areas of rubbing, pitting, and honest corrosion contribute to its authentic patina, telling the story of its working life at sea and ashore. The angled bracket feet further reinforce its utilitarian, shipboard construction.
After its maritime service, the cabinet was brought inland and used on a farm in Pembrokeshire for storing feed — a second chapter that adds to its rich provenance and rustic charm.
A striking and sculptural piece, equally suited to an interior with industrial, coastal, or vernacular character. It offers generous storage while retaining the raw integrity and history of its working past.
