A Monumental 19th Century Sawfish Rostrum (Bill)
Reputedly caught off Cat Island, Bahamas, late 19th / early 20th century
An exceptionally large and visually striking sawfish rostrum, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and reputedly caught off Cat Island in the Bahamas. Of impressive scale, the elongated ivory-toned blade is set with a dramatic series of sharply tapered lateral teeth running symmetrically along both edges, creating a powerful sculptural presence.
The rostrum retains a substantial bronze mounting to the broader end, allowing for wall display — likely added in period, reflecting the Victorian and Edwardian fascination with maritime curiosities and exotic natural history specimens brought back from the Caribbean and Atlantic waters
