Late 19th Century Burmese Padauk Table

A finely carved late 19th century Burmese occasional table in richly figured solid padauk, the circular removable top deeply carved with scrolling lotus vines around a central roundel. It stands on three beautifully pierced, foliate-carved legs of sculptural form, the base cleverly designed to fold for ease of transport.

Tables of this type were popular purchases among British soldiers and colonial administrators stationed in Burma during the late 19th century. Their ingenious folding construction made them practical to pack and ship home to “Blighty,” where they became much-admired exotic souvenirs and drawing-room conversation pieces.

A decorative yet functional example, with excellent colour, crisp carving and strong period character throughout.
