Aesthetic Movement Bamboo Occasional Table, c. 1880

A unusual 19th century Anglo-Japanese bamboo occasional table dating to the Aesthetic Movement period, circa 1880. The rectangular top and undertier both feature ebonised lacquer panels and chequer marquetry decoration  with gilt and red chinoiserie scenes of birds and flowering branches, framed by parquetry checkerboard borders. The structure is formed from finely patinated and naturally worn bamboo, joined with characteristic wooden pegs and angled supports. A highly decorative and practical piece that embodies the East Asian influence so favoured during the latter part of the Victorian era.
