19th-Century Grand Tour Bronze of Narcissus
£2,400.00
A fine 19th-century Grand Tour bronze figure of Narcissus, modelled in the classical manner and presented standing in a graceful contrapposto pose. The youthful, nude figure is depicted with his head gently inclined and one arm extended, conveying the elegant, contemplative character associated with the mythological Narcissus.
The sculpture is distinguished by a wonderful aged verdigris patina, ranging from soft sage and olive-green tones to deeper oxidised areas, giving the surface considerable depth and character. Fine details remain visible throughout, including the carefully rendered hair, facial features, musculature, hands and feet, together with the drapery and attributes held at his side.
The figure stands upon a substantial circular architectural pedestal, with the base enriched by classical decorative ornament. Its proportions, subject and finish are typical of the Grand Tour bronzes produced for the European and British market during the 19th century, when reductions of celebrated classical and Renaissance sculptures were highly sought after by travellers and collectors.
Height: 64 cm (25¼ in.)
