A fine 19th-century mahogany travelling apothecary box, of rectangular form with brass strapping and recessed campaign-style handle to the lid. The hinged cover opens to a fitted interior lined in rich crimson velvet, retaining a comprehensive arrangement of clear glass medicine bottles with original ground stoppers, many with traces of original contents.
The interior lid bears a retailer’s label for Savory & Moore, Chemists to the Queen, 143 New Bond Street & 220 Regent Street, London, a well-known and highly regarded supplier of medical equipment in the Victorian period. The base section is fitted with a pull-out drawer, also velvet-lined, containing a selection of accessories including lidded jars, a glass measure, mixing bowl, and a small spatula.
