Early 19th Century Pembrokeshire Welsh Painted Settle
A rare and atmospheric early 19th century Welsh settle from Pembrokeshire, retaining its original layered green paint with exceptional surface texture and depth. The high, plank-backed form is constructed from wide vertical boards, framed by gently shaped uprights that rise slightly above the back rail, a regional feature often seen in West Wales furniture.
The deep solid seat is flanked by simple boarded arms, supported on sturdy square legs joined by stretchers, giving the settle a robust, architectural presence. The old paint survives remarkably well, showing generations of wear, flaking and abrasion, revealing earlier tones beneath and creating a wonderfully honest, untouched surface.
Unrestored and full of character, this settle would originally have stood beside the hearth, offering both seating and shelter from drafts. Today it makes a striking statement piece for a hall, kitchen or inglenook, equally at home in a country house or contemporary interior.
A scarce and highly desirable example of early Welsh vernacular furniture, particularly with such original paint and strong Pembrokeshire provenance.
