Early 19th Century Welsh Cheese-Top Cricket Table
A charming and honest early 19th century Welsh cricket table, retaining its original thick sycamore “cheese” top, beautifully worn with a soft, buttery patina developed through generations of use. The circular top displays wonderful colour variation, faint knife marks and subtle surface irregularities that speak to its utilitarian rural origins.
The table is raised on three sturdy turned pitch pine legs, each showing crisp period turning, united by a well-proportioned T-form cross stretcher that provides excellent stability and is typical of Welsh vernacular furniture of the period. The underside construction and leg fixings further support an early 1800s date.
Unrestored and full of character, this is a highly decorative yet practical piece, ideal as a side table, lamp table or occasional table. Its simple, timeless form and warm natural materials make it equally suited to traditional or contemporary interiors.
A particularly good example of early Welsh country furniture, increasingly difficult to find in such untouched condition.
