19Th Century Indian elephant Jardinier Stand.

£325.00

A striking 19th century Anglo-Indian ebonised jardinier stand, exquisitely carved in the form of three stylised elephant heads, each with finely modelled trunks and inset  Faux ivory tusks. The elephant supports rise elegantly to a circular dished top, decorated with subtle concentric turning, and are united by a central turned column terminating in a decorative tripod base with carved detail.

The deep ebonised surface gives the piece a dramatic sculptural presence, typical of Anglo-Indian furniture produced for the colonial and export market in the mid to late 19th century, where traditional Indian craftsmanship was combined with forms suited to Western interiors. Both ornamental and functional, this rare stand would originally have been intended to display a jardinier or pot plant, and today remains a highly decorative and unusual statement piece.
