A 19th-Century Country House Servants’ Bell Board

A wonderfully untouched example of a late 19th-century servants’ bell board, retaining its original layers of worn green paint and a full run of beautifully cast brass bells. Each bell is mounted on an elegantly shaped wrought-iron bracket, several retaining decorative rosette spring mechanisms typical of finer country houses.

The long timber backboard shows generations of authentic wear and patination, the surface now a richly textured mosaic of crackled paint and exposed wood—an evocative reminder of its working life in a busy household. Each station is numbered, corresponding to individual rooms of the house, allowing the butler or staff to instantly identify where attention was required.

Functional, sculptural, and steeped in social history, this is a superb surviving piece of domestic service architecture—ideal as a feature display in a kitchen, hallway, or period interior.
