19Th Century Gothic Revival Whatnot Stand.

Gothic Revival Ebonised Canterbury / Whatnot, c. 1870

A striking mid-19th century Gothic Revival ebonised canterbury or tiered whatnot in the manner of Bruce James Talbert (1838-1881) richly decorated with four Minton tiles in the upper section. The tiles designed by John Moyr Smith for Minton feature bold medieval-inspired motifs in ochre, red, and black, framing a central stylised floral device—classic of the Aesthetic and early Revivalist movements.

Below, the structure is defined by pierced Gothic arches and quatrefoils, the shaped aprons and supports echoing ecclesiastical tracery. The three lower shelves offer practical display or storage space, while the base incorporates a deep section with further quatrefoil cut-outs, all raised on turned feet.

Retaining its original ebonised finish with gentle wear in all the right places, this is a wonderfully decorative and sculptural piece—equally suited as a feature in a hallway, library, or eclectic interior.
