18Th Century West Country Comb-Back stick Chair.
A Rare 18th Century West Country Comb-Back Stick Chair
A fine example of vernacular West Country furniture, this late 18th century comb-back stick chair is crafted in ash and elm with wonderful originality and character. The broad, single-piece shaped elm seat is deeply worn with age and retains traces of its original green paint. Rising from the seat, a splayed arrangement of hand-whittled stick spindles form the back and arms, curving into a rounded bentwood armrest, pegged and jointed in traditional fashion. The tall comb back is supported by slender spindles, giving the chair a striking yet practical silhouette. Standing on four stout legs united by a simple crinoline stretcher, the whole shows exceptional patination, surface wear, and honesty, embodying the rustic craftsmanship of the period.
England, West Country, circa 1780.
