19th Century Mahogany Chemist’s Box with Glass Bottles
A fine and evocative 19th century mahogany chemist’s box, retaining an attractive and largely complete fitted interior. The hinged lid opens to reveal a well-organised compartmentalised interior housing an assortment of original glass bottles and phials, including clear, blue and dark amber examples, some with ground or mushroom stoppers, alongside additional glass measures and vessels.
The box is well constructed in solid mahogany with pleasing colour and patination, showing honest wear commensurate with age. The interior retains its original wooden dividers and bottle recesses, indicating it was made for practical professional use rather than decorative display. The exterior is fitted with its original lock plate (key absent), and the lid interior is lined in the original fabric.
Such chemist or apothecary boxes were used for the storage and transport of medicinal preparations and chemicals during the Victorian period, often by travelling chemists, surgeons or country apothecaries. Today, pieces of this type are increasingly sought after for their visual appeal and historical interest.
A characterful and highly decorative antique, ideal for display in a study, library or shop interior, or as part of a scientific or medical collec
