Early 20th-century Cardiff butcher’s shop sign, carved from a substantial rectangular slab of weathered pale marble The sign measures approximately 123 cm long × 23 cm high.
The face bears the large, deeply incised capital lettering “BUTCHER”, with the original lettering showing considerable age-related wear. Beneath the final letters, a smaller impressed inscription appears to read “… SESSION Cardiff ,
The stone has developed an attractive aged, mottled patina, with extensive dark staining, lichen-like spotting, surface abrasion and areas of erosion consistent with prolonged outdoor exposure. The edges are irregular and worn, particularly at the corners, while the carved lettering remains clearly legible.
A substantial and characterful piece of early 20th-century commercial signage, the sign has strong associations with the traditional butcher’s trade and the historic streetscape of Cardiff, South Wales. Its original weathered surface and hand-carved lettering have been retained, giving it considerable decorative and historical appeal.
