A Large 19Th Century Cold Painted Bronze Fox By Franz Bergmann.
A superb and large-scale late 19th century Austrian cold-painted bronze model of a fox, finely cast and richly coloured, by the celebrated Viennese sculptor Franz Bergman (Austria, 1861–1936). The fox is depicted seated and alert, its head subtly turned, capturing a moment of watchful stillness with exceptional naturalism and character.
The modelling is of outstanding quality, with beautifully observed anatomy and deeply textured fur, enhanced by the original cold-painted surface in warm russet, ochre and dark brown tones. The glassy, expressive eyes and carefully detailed paws further demonstrate Bergman’s mastery of animal sculpture. The fox sits upon a naturalistic base, lending balance and presence to the composition.
The bronze is signed with Bergman’s distinctive foundry mark beneath, confirming authorship. Condition is excellent for its age, with strong, well-preserved original paint and only minimal wear consistent with age, adding to its authenticity and appeal.
Franz Bergman is widely regarded as one of the finest Viennese bronze artists of the period, and his animal subjects are particularly sought after. This impressive and evocative fox is a rare and highly decorative example, combining sculptural quality, painterly surface and strong provenance, making it a standout piece for any serious collection of Austrian bronzes or fine animal sculpture.
