19th-Century Whale-Bone Sailor’s Fid
A traditional 19th-century sailor’s fid, fashioned from whale bone and shaped into a long, tapered implement with a smooth, rounded handle. The a beautiful  naturally  patinated surface displays characteristic grain, darkened markings and wear consistent with prolonged use at sea. Designed for working with rope and rigging, the fid was used to separate strands of rope, open the lay for splicing and assist in the manipulation of heavy cordage. A practical example of the maritime crafts and resourcefulness of the age of sail, this piece combines simple functionality with the distinctive character of a natural material shaped by hand and time.
