19th Century Islamic Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid Table / Shisha Stand
A highly decorative 19th century Islamic occasional table of diminutive proportions, exquisitely crafted and richly adorned with intricate geometric marquetry and shimmering mother-of-pearl inlay throughout. Of hexagonal form, the table stands on six shaped legs united by Moorish-inspired arches, displaying exceptional craftsmanship and the refined decorative arts associated with the Middle East or North Africa.
The top is beautifully embellished with an elaborate geometric star motif, framed by complex parquetry and finely detailed linear inlay, while the frieze and legs continue the striking architectural and arabesque decoration. The iridescent mother-of-pearl catches the light beautifully, lending the piece remarkable visual depth and character.
Standing just 36 cm high and 26 cm across, this charming table was most probably intended for use as a shisha (hookah) table or stand, designed to hold a pipe and accompanying accessories in an intimate interior setting. Equally suitable today as a decorative occasional table, display stand, or collector’s piece.
