Early 19th-Century West Country  Armchair

A fine early 19th-century West Country Windsor armchair, of large proportions and traditional vernacular form, constructed in elm and beech. The chair has a characteristic bow-shaped spindle back with numerous turned spindles, broad curved arms supported on elegant bow-shaped arm supports, and a substantial shaped solid-elm seat with a pronounced rounded front.

The chair stands on four boldly turned and tapering legs, united by a distinctive the  stretcher has wonderful ware probably from farm dog over the years, fantastic colour and patina through out.

Of particular interest is the maker’s stamp impressed to the rear of the chair, providing useful evidence of its original maker and potentially allowing the chair to be attributed to a particular West Country workshop or chair making family.
