A Fine Irish Regency Rosewood Centre Table, Attributed to William & Gibton, Dublin, circa 1835

A magnificent early 19th-century Irish rosewood centre table, almost certainly by the celebrated Dublin cabinetmakers William & Gibton, dating to circa 1835.

The impressive circular top,  in richly figured rosewood, is surrounded by a deeply carved and boldly scrolling frieze, profusely decorated with stylised acanthus foliage and scrolling leaf motifs. The frieze is supported on an exceptionally impressive triform pedestal base, each sweeping and elegantly shaped leg lavishly carved with further acanthus ornament and terminating in distinctive scrolling feet.

The table is of particularly fine proportions, with a strikingly sculptural quality and an exceptional depth of carving throughout. The dark, lustrous rosewood and exuberant ornamentation are characteristic of the finest Irish furniture of the Regency period.

The design, quality of craftsmanship and elaborate carved decoration are strongly suggestive of the work of William & Gibton, one of Ireland’s most distinguished furniture-making firms, renowned for its high-quality cabinetmaking and richly carved furniture.
