19th-Century Welsh Woollen Blanket, Attributed to Lewis Jones of Lampeter
A fine and unusual 19th-century Welsh woollen blanket, attributed to Lewis Jones of Lampeter, woven on a narrow loom and constructed in two separately woven sections, subsequently joined together by a central stitched seam.
The blanket is of rectangular form and woven in a striking geometric checked and plaid pattern, worked predominantly in natural shades of cream, black, grey and warm brown. The central field is composed of a highly distinctive small-scale check, surrounded by bands of varied geometric and lozenge-like patterns, with larger checked panels to the four corners. The contrasting patterns create a particularly bold and sophisticated optical effect characteristic of Welsh domestic weaving.
The construction is of particular interest: owing to the limitations of the narrow-width loom, the blanket was woven in two lengths and carefully stitched together, the joining seam visible through the centre. The outer edges retain their original woven fringed ends, adding to its authenticity and decorative character.
