Large 19th-Century Taxidermy Tortoise Shell

A remarkably large 19th-century taxidermy tortoise shell, of impressive scale, almost standing one meter tall. The substantial carapace retains its natural domed form and distinctive division into broad, irregular scutes, with the individual plates emphasised by darkened seams and naturally occurring surface contours.

The scale is exceptional, making this an imposing example of nineteenth-century natural-history taxidermy and Victorian curiosity collecting. Such large tortoise shells were prized as objects of natural history and were commonly displayed in country houses, museums, scientific collections and cabinets of curiosities.
