19Th Century Folk Art Ship Diorama.

£600.00

A charming 19th century folk art ship diorama housed within an exceptionally decorative tramp work frame.

The shadow box interior presents a finely detailed three–masted sailing vessel under full sail, its rigging carefully strung and its deep oxblood-red sails giving wonderful warmth and contrast against a softly painted seascape background. The ship sits upon textured, hand-painted waters, accompanied by a smaller sailing craft and a tiny sailing boat and tug ship, creating a lively coastal narrative. The perspective and depth within the box give the scene a theatrical, almost stage-set quality typical of sailor-made or coastal folk art pieces of the period.

The diorama is set within an elaborate tramp work frame, richly chip-carved with repeating geometric patterns and layered borders. The dark-stained wood, with its distinctive notched carving, frames the maritime scene beautifully and adds a strong sculptural presence. The symmetrical construction and stepped corners are characteristic of late 19th century tramp art, often associated with itinerant craftsmen and seafaring communities.
