19Th Century Oriental Silver Box.

£285.00

A finely worked 19th-century Oriental silver-plated casket / box, richly decorated in high relief with intricate scrolling foliage and three standing deities in traditional dress, likely of Indian or South-East Asian inspiration, framed by dense floral borders typical of late 19th-century export metalwork.

The lid is particularly detailed, featuring repoussé and chased ornamentation with mythological or courtly figures beneath elaborate vegetal scrollwork. The craftsmanship suggests workshop production for the European market during the Victorian period, when such exotic revival pieces were highly fashionable.

Of special interest is the presence of a concealed release button cleverly hidden within the decoration, allowing the lid to open via a spring or catch mechanism. This type of hidden device is characteristic of novelty boxes and puzzle caskets produced in the 19th century, adding both mechanical interest and collectable appeal.

The interior is lined in red fabric, and the body appears to be of base metal with silver plating, consistent with decorative export wares of the period.

Condition:

Good antique condition with age-related wear to the plating, minor rubbing to high points, and small surface marks consistent with use. Mechanism present and functional (if applicable — adjust if needed).

Period: 19th century

Material: Silver-plated metal

Origin: Probably India / Anglo-Indian / Oriental export work
