19Th Century Painted Welsh Dresser.
A Rare 19th Century Painted Cardigan Welsh Dresser
An exceptional mid-19th century Welsh dresser from the Cardigan area, retaining its original scumbled paint finish throughout. This is a remarkably untouched example, showing honest wear and patination consistent with age, yet remaining structurally sound and visually striking.
The dresser displays classic Welsh proportions, with a tall boarded rack above a well-balanced base, giving it an elegant yet robust country presence. The original faux-grained (scumbled) paintwork survives beautifully, a highly desirable feature and increasingly rare to find, particularly on dressers of this size and quality. The soft, muted interior paint contrasts attractively with the darker exterior tones.
The upper section features three open shelves with original cup hooks, ideal for the display of pottery and kitchenware. Below, the base comprises three drawers over two panelled cupboard doors, flanking a central open recess—traditionally used for dairy storage—retaining its original painted interior. All doors and drawers retain their original wooden knobs and fittings.
Of particularly note are the dresser’s proportions: measuring approximately 4 ft 8 in wide by 6 ft 6 in high, it is both generous yet manageable, making it highly versatile for modern interiors while remaining true to its vernacular roots.
Welsh dressers in such untouched, original condition are now increasingly scarce, especially those retaining their historic painted surface rather than later restorations or stripping. This is a superb example of 19th century Welsh country furniture, full of character, authenticity, and quiet integrity.
