A Rare 19Th Century Red Chequered Welsh Blanket.

A Rare 19th Century Welsh Red Chequered Blanket, Attributed to Lewis Jones, Lampeter

A striking and rare example of a 19th century Welsh blanket woven in a bold red and white chequered pattern, attributed to Lewis Jones, Mayor of Lampeter (d.1927). Jones was a highly skilled weaver whose work is now recognised as some of the finest of its period. His looms are preserved today in the Newtown Wool Museum, alongside surviving examples of his blankets.

This piece exemplifies the geometric clarity and rhythm of traditional Welsh weaving, its strong checkerboard pattern enclosed by solid borders and corner panels. A key patron of Jones’ work was Mrs. Winifred Margaret Coombe Tennant (1874–1956), the renowned Welsh suffragist, art patron and cultural figure, who championed the production of these blankets as symbols of national craft and identity.

Such blankets not only embody the domestic and rural textile traditions of Wales but also reflect a period of cultural pride and revival in Welsh design during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This example, with its vibrant red dye and balanced design, survives as a rare testament to Jones’ craftsmanship and the enduring artistry of Welsh weaving.
