19Th Century West Country Spindle Back Elbow Chair.

£1,250.00

A  19th Century West Country spindle Back Elbow Chair, in the manner of Richard Frost of Cullompton, Devon (chair maker 1823–1841).

A rare and characterful example of the so-called spindle back elbow chair, strongly associated with the distinctive workshop traditions of Richard Frost and his followers in Devon. The chair is constructed with a boldly shaped elm saddle seat, displaying a deep and honest surface of age and use. The high arched back is formed with an elm yoke and a series of slender spindles, curving into the continuous arm bow, supported by diagonal under-arm spindles – a hallmark of West Country design.

This chair bears witness to its long working life with historic wrought iron repairs, adding to its integrity and narrative, while testifying to the value placed upon it by generations of owners. The surface retains a rich, dark patina built up over time, enhancing the warm figuring of the elm and ash components.

Chairs of this type are traditionally attributed to the celebrated Devon chair maker Richard Frost of Cullompton (1823–1841), whose innovative and robust regional interpretations of the Windsor form created a recognisable and highly collectable West Country vernacular style.

A piece of great charm, embodying the functional ingenuity and rustic elegance of late 19th century provincial craftsmanship.
