19th Century Maghreb Silver and Ebony Casket
A finely crafted North African casket from the Maghreb region, dating to the 19th century. The rectangular form is constructed from rich ebony panels, mounted with intricate silver strapwork and engraved geometric motifs typical of Islamic decorative arts. The domed lid is embellished with raised triangular and circular designs, each bordered with fine line engraving, and surmounted by silver knop finials. The front is fitted with its original lock and key, the silver mounts engraved with a mixture of linear, circular, and diamond patterns in harmonious repetition.
This casket exemplifies the skill of Maghrebi silversmiths, combining the deep lustre of ebony with the refinement of hand-engraved silver, producing a work both functional and highly decorative. Such boxes were traditionally used for valuables or documents, reflecting both wealth and cultural identity.
