19Th Century Welsh Cricket Table.
A charming and well-proportioned 19th century Welsh cricket table, distinguished by its original painted finish and unmistakable vernacular character. Traditionally found in humble cottages and rural farmsteads across Wales, cricket tables like this were practical, modestly made, and deeply rooted in local craft traditions.
This example, dating from the mid-1800s, features a circular top made from solid pine top and ash legs, its surface timeworn and gently undulating from generations of use. The three splayed legs—typical of Welsh cricket tables—are tenoned directly into the underside of the top, providing stability without the need for nails or screws. Beneath, a fixed triangular shelf (sometimes referred to as a “pot board”) adds both strength and utility, ideal for resting a jug, candle box, or Bible.
What sets this table apart is its original painted surface—a rare survival. The base is finished in a soft, oxidised colours , now wonderfully crackled and faded with age, revealing the rich tones of the wood beneath. This layered patina speaks to decades, if not centuries, of quiet domestic life, and gives the table a depth of character that cannot be replicated.
