18Th Century Indian Shield (Dhal)
A rare 18th century Indian dhal shield, Gujarat culture circa 1780. constructed from heavy gauge animal hide probably buffalo or rhino. The face of the shield incorporates a complex hand painted central medallion. Polychrome decoration forms a rim around the shield. The reverse side of the shield has a wonderful deep red pigment with simple gilded decoration. Four raised bronze stars to hold straps on the back of the shield.
Collectors paper label on the Front of the shield.
condition : wear on edges and few areas of paint lose genuine age and usage consistent of a item of this age.
